The Dominant Clinches: Dominant clinches are clinches where one fighter has a distinct positional advantage over his/her opponent. Some dominate clinches are used as a transition, such as a wrestler using a double underhook clinch to get a takedown. Some dominant clinches are used for striking purposes especially in Muay Thai kickboxing.

Week Five: The Standing Clinches
Clinching skills are essential to any Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. Not just from an offensive standpoint, but also from a defensive point of view. The Clinch is an underused defensive tool. How many times have we seen a fighter stunned by a blow back up against the ropes (or cage) and try and cover up, only to be pounded out by his opponent?
In cases like this a clinch would be a much better and safer option.

Melvin is an explosive puncher with knockout power in both hands as well as a underrated ground game. He is 3-1 in his UFC® career with 3 knockouts. Stevenson is an excellent grappler who also has a 3-1 UFC® record. Both fighters only UFC® losses came from Josh Neer at 170 lbs. Stevenson will look to avoid Melvin’s power and take the fight to the ground with him in the top position, where his ground and pound, and submissions are excellent. Melvin will look to strike, avoid the takedown, and inflict heavy damage on Stevenson. Melvin has shown good strikes on the ground from the top position, but will want to avoid the bottom position at all costs. This should be a war.
