A.S.U. cancels wrestling program.

Arizona State University has announced it will cancel its wrestling program effective immediately. The University has produced some of the nation’s top amateur wrestlers, as well as some of MMA’s premier fighters. Dan “The Beast” Severn, a MMA legend was the first high profile ASU product to make his way onto the MMA scene. He appeared in UFC 4, losing to Royce Gracie. He returned at UFC 5, and won the tournament.

Pride Champion Dan Henderson, Randy Couture and Don “The Predator” Frye are all former ASU wrestlers who won major MMA championships.

MMA Merchandise: book review

Mastering JUJITSU  by Renzo Gracie and John Danaher published by Human Kinetics. This was the first MMA book I added to my collection, and is one of the best that I own. Well written, with high quality pictures that break down the techniques step by step. This book covers all aspects of Jujitsu, not just the Brazilian version that the Gracie family is famous for. Punches, kicks, and knee strikes are all covered in this book. This is a complete MMA instructional book, and is a great addition to any collection. I purchased my copy at Amazon.com

Beginning MMA: Week 6 the Standing Clinches

Week Six: The Standing Clinches

The Dominant Clinches: Dominant clinches are clinches where one fighter has a distinct positional advantage over his/her opponent. Some dominate clinches are used as a transition, such as a wrestler using a double underhook clinch to get a takedown. Some dominant clinches are used for striking purposes especially in Muay Thai kickboxing.

Beginning MMA: Week 5 the Standing Clinches

Beginning MMA:

Welcome to our Beginning MMA series, a weekly series of articles designed to give the beginning MMA enthusiast a chance to gather valuable experience and tips even before stepping into the gym.

Week Five: The Standing Clinches

Clinching skills are essential to any Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. Not just from an offensive standpoint, but also from a defensive point of view. The Clinch is an underused defensive tool. How many times have we seen a fighter stunned by a blow back up against the ropes (or cage) and try and cover up, only to be pounded out by his opponent?

Training with the Exercise Ball

The exercise ball is an excellent MMA training tool. The ball provides an entire body workout. Use of the ball teaches balance as well as strengthening the body’s core. You can practice punches and kicks while sitting on the ball, this may prove difficult at first but with practice the user will stay balanced while throwing punches as well as kicks.
