Former WWE champ and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar survived an early onslaught by Interim Champ Shane Carwin to secure a take down in the second round and work to a beautiful arm triangle choke which forced Carwin to tap. Carwin rocked Lesnar early, sending him backpedaling with big punches, he dropped Lesnar and scored with brutal ground and pound which opened cuts over both Lesnar’s eyes. Lesnar survived, and Carwin didn’t look the same coming out for the second round. Middleweight brawler Chris Leben scored a dramatic victory over Japanese Superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama by way of third round triangle choke submission. The two brawlers exchanged blows for the first two rounds, both fighters showing power and the ability to take a punch, Akiyama was better on the ground, while Leben had a slight edge on the feet. an exhausted Akiyama took Leben to the ground in the third, Leben worked for a triangle choke and secured it, forcing Akiyama to tap

Krystoph Sochinski and Stephan Bonnar continued their war with two more rounds of action, Bonnar finally dropped Sochinski with a big knee, and followed up with punches for the stoppage

Chris Lytle put on a ground clinic in a submission victory over Matt Brown, Brown looked strong early, with more accurate punching combined with a size advantage, that quickly changed when Lytle took him to the mat, he secured a sideways triangle choke, and isolated the right arm of Brown he locked the right arm in a straight arm bar for the verbal tap out.
George Sotiropoulus defeated Kurt Pellegrino via unanimous decision.
Brendan Schaub defeated Chris Tuchscherer via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Ricardo Romero defeated Seth Petruzelli via submission (Americana) in round two
Gerald Harris defeated Dave Branch via knockout (slam) in round three
Jon Madsen defeated Karlos Vemola via unanimous decision
Kendall Grove defeated Goran Reljic via split decision
Daniel Roberts defeated Forrest Petz via split decision

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and “Shuga” Rashad Evans heated up the verbal warfare leading up to their showdown on the UFC114 fight card. Rampage apparently twittered that Evans was going to need a pillow to lay on after he KO’d him. Evans fired back saying he bought Rampage a snuggie so he would be nice and toasty laying on the mat. This bout is shaping up to be one of the “real” grudge matches in recent UFC history. Rampage vs Wanderlei Silva, along with the Koscheck vs Paul Daley stand out, but this one has the makings to be a real grudge match. Give Rampage the edge in KO power, as well as good defense against punches, Forrest Griffin was able to land kicks at will in their bout, but leg kicks are not Evans forte. Rashad has fast hands, good takedowns, and his ground and pound is lethal, neither fighter has won many bouts by way of submission.

On the undercard of Machida vs Shogun 2, this scrap is sure to have fireworks, as neither fighter is shy in or out of the cage. Koscheck, one of the best wrestlers in MMA has shown a willingness to stand and bang, as he did against Anthony Johnson in his last bout. Koscheck wisely took the bout to the ground in the second and choked Johnson out. Daley is an even more dangerous striker than Johnson, having KO power in both hands, his takedown defense is underrated, and he is very experienced, look for him to try and goad Koscheck into a striking battle, possibly starting a confrontation at the UFC113 weigh in. No matter what the result of the bout is, this one could be the best bout on the UFC113 fight card.

Will Frankie Edgar’s wrestling and boxing skills be enough to unseat Lightweight king BJ Penn at UFC112? The answer lies in the fast hands and grappling skills of Edgar, who has only lost once in his MMS career, losing to fellow wrestler Grey Maynard. If Edgar can use the slick footwork he showed against Sean Sherk to get in and out on Penn he can definately score in the standup game against the more stationary Penn. Edgar also needs to score takedowns to keep Penn honest and thinking, Edgar will need to pick Penn off of his feet to be able to get him to the ground, as Penn has extraordinary balance, and is able to hop on one leg to avoid takedowns, Edgar needs clean double leg takedowns either in the center of the Octgon, or along the fence. While the GSP vs Dan Hardy and the Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin bouts are getting most of the headlines, the other bouts on the UFC111 fight card are quality MMA bouts as well. The rematch between Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves is sure to be a total war, as both fighters are good on their feet as well as the ground. Matt Brown vs Ricardo Almeida is another contender for the UFC11 “fight of the night”. Nate Diaz vs Rory Markham could end in the UFC111 “Submission of the Night” if Diaz can get it to the ground, or UFC111 “KO of the night” if Markham can land one of his big punches.

Can the Juijitsu whiz do what no one has done since Jan 2006 and that is get a win over Silva, that loss was from a dq for an illegal kick to the face of Yushin Okami. You have to go all the way back to 2004 and Ryo Chonan’s flying sissor kick followed by a heel hook which forced Silva to submit. The last Juijitsu player Silva faced was unable to keep Silva on the mat for any extended period of time, and was only able to take him down a few times, Maia has better takedowns than Leites, as he showed against world class wrestler Chael Sonnen, taking him down with a throw and a triangle choke. If Maia is in tremendous shape, his efforts could result in a victory at UFC112.

Brian “All American” Stann will meet Phil”Mr Wonderful” Davis in a Light Heavyweight bout on the UFC109 fight card. Stann is a former WEC Light Heavyweight champ, and is coming off of an impressive win over nemesis Steve Cantwell. He had the crisper standup in that bout, and used excellent footwork to cruise to a unanimous decision win.

Phil Davis is a NCAA champion wrestler at 197 lbs, and has shown good power in his punches, he will look to get Stann to the mat and work ground n pound. Stann will want to keep the fight on his feet, and use his punching power to look for the KO

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig will try and keep his UFC career afloat when he takes on the equally desperate Justin Buchholz on the UFC109 fight card. Danzig started off strong in his UFC career, taking out Jujitsu whiz Mark Bocek in his debut but has since lost 3 straight bouts, he has decent punching power, good submissions, and trains at a great camp in xtreme Couture. Danzig is small for the division, and has had problems getting out from under the wrestlers he has faced, he was bloodied and ground and pounded in his last bout, a unanimous decision loss to Jim Miller at UFC100.

Justin Buchholz is also trying to keep his UFC career alive, he has dropped 3 of 4 inside the Octagon, and need a victory or at least “fight of the night” honors to remain a UFC fighter, at 6’0” he is tall for the division, and is a good wrestler, he was subbed by Matt Wiman and Terry Etim via choke and will need to watch out for the subs of Danzig, he will look to take Danzig to the mat and work his ground and pound, he will try and wear down the smaller Danzig and grind out a victory. A good match up on the UFC109 fight card

A classic striker vs grappler matchup is on tap for the UFC108 fight card. Briton Paul Daley burst on the scene at UFC105, smashing the highly regarded Martin Kampmann in less than a round, he is a huge Welterweight, with big power in his hands and feet, and his takedown defense is also good, he has fought some of the best in the world including Jake Shields, Dave Strasser and Duane “Bang” Ludwig, he will look to keep it standing and try for an impressive knockout.

Dustin Hazelett is an unorthodox fighter with submissions from every angle, and underrated standup, he is not afraid to trade punches, but will look for the takedown early, he has not fought in 2009, while Daley has fought 4 times this year, with 3 KO/TKO’s and a split decision loss to Nick Thompson
