Brian “All American” Stann will meet Phil”Mr Wonderful” Davis in a Light Heavyweight bout on the UFC109 fight card. Stann is a former WEC Light Heavyweight champ, and is coming off of an impressive win over nemesis Steve Cantwell. He had the crisper standup in that bout, and used excellent footwork to cruise to a unanimous decision win.

Phil Davis is a NCAA champion wrestler at 197 lbs, and has shown good power in his punches, he will look to get Stann to the mat and work ground n pound. Stann will want to keep the fight on his feet, and use his punching power to look for the KO

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig will try and keep his UFC career afloat when he takes on the equally desperate Justin Buchholz on the UFC109 fight card. Danzig started off strong in his UFC career, taking out Jujitsu whiz Mark Bocek in his debut but has since lost 3 straight bouts, he has decent punching power, good submissions, and trains at a great camp in xtreme Couture. Danzig is small for the division, and has had problems getting out from under the wrestlers he has faced, he was bloodied and ground and pounded in his last bout, a unanimous decision loss to Jim Miller at UFC100.

Justin Buchholz is also trying to keep his UFC career alive, he has dropped 3 of 4 inside the Octagon, and need a victory or at least “fight of the night” honors to remain a UFC fighter, at 6’0” he is tall for the division, and is a good wrestler, he was subbed by Matt Wiman and Terry Etim via choke and will need to watch out for the subs of Danzig, he will look to take Danzig to the mat and work his ground and pound, he will try and wear down the smaller Danzig and grind out a victory. A good match up on the UFC109 fight card

A classic striker vs grappler matchup is on tap for the UFC108 fight card. Briton Paul Daley burst on the scene at UFC105, smashing the highly regarded Martin Kampmann in less than a round, he is a huge Welterweight, with big power in his hands and feet, and his takedown defense is also good, he has fought some of the best in the world including Jake Shields, Dave Strasser and Duane “Bang” Ludwig, he will look to keep it standing and try for an impressive knockout.

Dustin Hazelett is an unorthodox fighter with submissions from every angle, and underrated standup, he is not afraid to trade punches, but will look for the takedown early, he has not fought in 2009, while Daley has fought 4 times this year, with 3 KO/TKO’s and a split decision loss to Nick Thompson

Heavyweight strikers Gilbert Yvel and Junior Dos Santos will face off on the UFC108 fight card on 1/2/10 It would come as a surprise if this one went the distance, both fighters have shown they like to stand and trade punches, with both fighters also having an “in your face” style.

Dos Santos faced veteran Mirco Cro Cop in his last bout, a brutal bout won by Dos Santos when Cro Cop verbally submitted in the third due to an eye injury, Dos Santos was pounding Cro Cop at the time and no doubt would have finished with a TKO/KO. He has reportedly an excellent ground game but we have not seen it yet in his UFC career.

Gilbert Yvel is a veteran kick boxer with tons of experience; he can be volatile in the cage, with a history of eye gouging as well as other indiscretions. His ground skills are limited at best as he showed in his last bout against Josh Barnett in the Affliction event, Barnett got mount several times and pounded Yvel en route to an easy victory

Vladmir “The Janitor” Matyushenko will face Steve Cantwell in a Light Heavyweight bout. Cantwell is a former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion, and was the champ when the WEC disbanded the division. Matyushenko was the IFL champ when they closed operations.

Lightweight champ BJ Penn will make his second title defense when he takes on Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez 12/12/09 on the UFC107 fight card. Penn won the interim title with a beat down of Joe Stevenson at UFC80, then unified the title with a dominating TKO over former champ Sean Sherk at UFC84, he then moved up in weight to challenge Georges St Pierre for the Welterweight title, he was overwhelmed and forced to quit after the fourth round. He next defended his title against Kenny Florian and took him out in the fourth round via rear naked choke. Penn will take on his most aggressive opponent yet when he faces the torrid pace of Diego Sanchez.

Lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Kenny Florian try and keep their title hopes alive when they clash on the UFC107 fight card. A win by Guida could possibly garner him a title shot, as the list of opponents defeated by BJ Penn continues to grow, a win by Guida combined with a win by Penn in the main event could lead to his shot in 2010. Florian has already been defeated by Penn and will need a victory here as well as a win by Diego Sanchez over Penn to secure another chance at the title.

Give the wrestling advantage to Clay Guida, while Florian has the better Jujitsu, Guida has good hands and his takedowns are excellent, Florian meanwhile has a more diverse attack on the feet with nice kicks,knees and elbows from the clinch, both fighters are also known for their cardio. French striker Cheick Kongo will face Jujitsu specialist Frank Mir on the UFC107 fight card. Both fighters are coming off of losses, and need a win to stay on top of the stacked Heavyweight division, Mir was trounced by Champ Brock Lesnar in his last bout, making several key mistakes that led to his 2nd round TKO loss. A jumping knee led to a Lesnar takedown, then letting Lesnar get control of his wrist which left Mir unable to block the hard shots from Lesnar, leading to the finish.

Cheick Kongo fought a game bout against Cain Velasquez, but was unable to stop the takedown, and the ground and pound from Velasquez, on the feet Kongo rocked Cain several times with big rights, and seemed on his way to a first round KO, instead he suffered a unanimous decision loss

Mir will look to get the fight to the mat early and work his world class submissions, he showed excellent boxing in his win over Noguiera, but will want to avoid exchanging with the tall, powerful, Kongo. Roy “Big Country” Nelson locked James McSweeney in a crucifix and pounded him until the ref had seen enough to earn his spot in the finale, while Brenden Schaub rocked Marcus Jones with a big right hand, and KO’d him on the ground with several hard right hands.

McSweeney was controlling the fight against Nelson when he started show boating, dropping his hands and throwing one punch at a time. Nelson timed him and landed a flush right hand which staggered McSweeney, Nelson got the takedown and the fight never got back to standing position

Likewise Jones got an early takedown against Schaub, and was controlling the fight, even getting mount position, Schaub escaped, and capitalized, landing a big right that dropped Jones.

Streetbrawler Kimbo Slice will also be on the fight card as he takes on Houston Alexander at a 215 catch weight. Matt Hamil will take on Jon “Bones” Jones in an excellent Light Heavyweight bout. Frankie Edgar will take on Matt Veach in a Lightweight bout, and Matt “Meathead” Mitrione will battle Marcus Jones in a grudge match

Jon Fitch and Mike Pierce will face off in a Welterweight bout on the UFC107 fight card. Fitch challenged GSP for the title, but came up short in a brutal 5 round decision loss, he rebounded nicely, scoring decision victories over Akihiro Gono, and Paulo Thiago. He has much improved standup, and is a world class grappler, combining wrestling with a Jujitsu black belt under Dave Camarillo.

Mike Pierce is a strong wrestler with power in his hands, he will look to get inside the reach of the taller Fitch and take him down, he prefers the ground and pound attack as he showed in his last bout, a win over Brock Larson at UFC Fight Night on Sep 16th.
