Mike Brown crushed the aura of “invincibility” that Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber had built, landing two huge punches that floored the Champion, the second punch hit Faber so hard, that his feet flew up in the air and he landed on the back of his head, Brown followed up with a few punches on the ground, the referee had seen enough, stopping the fight in the first round. Paulo Filho failed to make weight, so his Middleweight belt was not on the line against Chael Sonnen, which turned out to be a good thing for Filho as he plodded around the ring looking for a takedown against an Olympic caliber wrestler in Sonnen. Filho looked like he wanted to be somewhere else, and Sonnen didn’t really press the attack, resulting in a 3 round “borefest” won unanimously by Sonnen. Leonard Garcia showed the perfect gameplan to defeat Jens Pulver, letting Pulver come forward and then counterpunch through the weak defense of Pulver, Garcia showed great power, and he may get the next crack at new Champ Mike Brown
Lightweight champ Jamie Varner only needed 2 minutes to stop the tough Marcus Hicks, and retain his WEC Lightweight belt. Hicks scored a couple of nice takedowns early, but couldn’t keep the wrestler Varner on the mat, Varner then unleashed a barrage of punches and knees that had Hicks out on his feet, Hicks would not fall, and Varner continued to pound away until he finally fell.Steve Cantwell avenged an earlier loss to Brian Stann, with a nice display of striking, outpunching the less mobile Stann before stopping him in the second round, capturing the WEC Light Heavyweight title. Hiromitsu Miura showed the heart of a warrior, pushing Carlos Condit to the limit before being stopped in the 4th round of their WEC Welterweight Title bout. Miura showed beautiful Judo throws to counter the Muay Thai clinch of Condit, and scored from Condit’s guard as well, But the Champion was too much for him showing great positioning on the ground as well as nice kicks and punches, this fight was a good one.
3 WEC belts will be on the line tonight at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. Lightweight Jamie Varner will make his first title defense against Marcus Hicks, Varner defeated Rob McCullough by TKO in the third round to win the title. Hicks has won all 3 of his WEC bouts by submission. Also making his first title defense is Brian Stann, who won the Light Heavyweight Title with a first round KO over Doug Marshall, Stann also holds a victory over tonights opponent Steve Cantwell, who has rebounded from the loss to Stann with two straight victories. Condit has fought 4 tough opponents in his WEC career, and won them all by way of submission, he is ranked in the top ten by most MMA publications, he is facing a strong striker in Miura, who dropped down fron the 185lb division in his last fight, a TKO over Blas Avena. Also on the main card Brian Bowles vs Damacio Page, and Micah Miller vs Josh Grispi. A Welterweight fight between Carlo Prater and Brock Larson is not scheduled for the main card, but should be.
